A bill that would help the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation expand their newly established reservation by receiving what is now Shabbona Lake and State Park advanced out of a state House committee, despite concerns about the tribe’s long-term plans for the DeKalb County property.
House Bill 4718 would authorize the state to hand over Shabbona to the tribe for $1. It also allows the tribe and DNR to enter into a land management agreement under which the land would remain open to the public for recreational use for an unspecified period.
