Ohio Insider: Cincinnati’s Rob Beckman nominated as candidate for NRA board of directors

Rob Beckman, of Cincinnati, has been a friend to Ohio Outdoor News for many years.
I’ve known he is a mover and a shaker in the outdoor world for a while now. Beckman has been a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) for better than 20 years. But, recently, not unlike a lot of others, Beckman hasn’t been pleased with the direction of the gun rights organization. So, he decided to do what he can to change that.

Ohio angler on breaking 32-year-old state striper record while fishing for panfish — ‘did we really just do this?’

It’s been many years since Kiser Lake, a small impoundment in Champaign County, has been stocked with striped bass (not hybrids), but Kiser has produced Ohio’s newest state fishing record.
And it may be a while before this record is broken again. After all, the previous record stood for 32 years. The new state record striper was caught by George Bruggeman of New Carlisle, Ohio.

Will Ohio’s deer gun hunters come close to matching a near record harvest from last year?

The stars couldn’t have aligned much better for hunters during last year’s deer gun season in Ohio.
The weather for the weeklong gun hunt in late November was near perfect and for the first time the ODNR Division of Wildlife made the Deer Management Permit valid through gun season. What resulted was a near record gun season harvest.

Ohio Insider: State trawl results the latest in good news for Lake Erie walleye anglers

The good news about Lake Erie’s walleye hatches just keeps on coming.
Each year since 1988, Ohio and Ontario have completed trawl surveys in their respective waters of the Western Basin and combined results to provide one index of hatch success for Lake Erie walleyes. Western Basin trawl surveys of young-of-year (YOY) walleyes in 2025 will be used to predict how many walleyes will enter the adult population as 2-year-old fish in 2027.

Lack of doe harvest a trend nationwide

The lack of antlerless deer harvest to help balance out the herd is not only a problem in Ohio but it is in most of the United States.
That was the general takeaway from a recent National Deer Association (NDA) podcast in the organization’s “Deer Season 365” series.
“As you shoot more does and the (deer) herd gets healthier, you’ll also see corresponding antler growth for the bucks,” said Kip Adams, the NDA’s chief conservation officer.

When Andrew Pegman started to delve into the world of outdoor writing he never thought about writing for the big national publications. But, a dozen or so years after first penning a piece on steelhead fishing for Ohio Outdoor News, that’s exactly where Pegman finds himself.
