Four thoughts on spring habitat work to benefit fish and wildlife

Ernest Hemingway wrote that when spring arrives, the only problem is “where to be happiest.” It’s a time of rebirth, a time of hope and, for wildlife, a season when tender green buds and shoots signal the coming end of winter’s frigid scarcity.
For people who want to improve habitat, it’s also time to roll up sleeves.

What can Wisconsin deer hunters expect in the 2025 season? Here’s a look at each region

Wisconsin’s nine-day gun deer season will run Nov. 22-30.
Before heading into the woods, hunters should know key regulatory changes and boundary adjustments. Unit maps have changed, tag allotments have been adjusted and mild winters in recent years could improve this year’s odds of success.

Need extreme taxidermy fix? Go visit Wisconsin’s John Balfanz

John Balfanz’s rural Prairie du Sac home in Wisconsin is filled from top to bottom with “entaxied” animal mounts. There are shoulder and euro mounts of white-tailed deer. There are turkey tailfeathers and beards. There are moose antlers, snake skins, a stuffed badger, pheasant, crow, bear, and more.
Some are handed down from Balfanz’s father, who enjoyed taxidermy for years. Many were done by Balfanz himself, who took up the hobby after his father passed away.

The true ‘bedrock’ of American fisheries, Dingell-Johnson Act celebrates 75 years

“If you’re fishing anywhere in a public place, in water pretty much anywhere in the United States, Dingell-Johnson probably contributed to it,” said Rob Shane, public affairs manager for the American Sportfishing Association.

“It is the cornerstone of the American fisheries model,” Shane said. “It’s quite literally the bedrock.”
The Dingell-Johnson Act is essentially a self-imposed excise tax dreamed up by the fishing industry. Its impact over the past three-quarters of a century is massive.

Wisconsin’s Brett Leable spreading word on free-dive fish spearing

“I always say if you like to hunt, and you like to fish, you will love spearfishing,” Brett Leable said. “It’s basically hunting while underwater.”
Leable, a member of the National Freshwater Spearfishing Association (NFSA) Board of Directors, spreads the gospel of spearfishing wherever he goes, saying it offers fun for people of all ages and skill levels. He hopes that by raising awareness and attracting new spearers, old tensions will fade into history and those who prefer coming face–to–face with their quarry can be more fully embraced by the sporting community.

Remains of huge bucks found locked together on unique public prairie in Wisconsin

“It was the Ides of March,” recalled Dan Halling. “That’s a pretty good start to the story, right? But it was, it was March 15, and it was a pretty good day for me.”
Halling was roaming the grounds of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant in Sauk County, Wis., when he saw what he initially thought was a set of elk antlers protruding from the underbrush.
“I thought elk, but there aren’t any elk around here,” he said.

Lake Winnebago’s ’24 fall trawl survey has good news for many Wisconsin anglers

For four decades, the annual Department of Natural Resources (DNR) trawling survey of Lake Winnebago has painted a picture of the health of Wisconsin’s largest inland lake and the many species of fish that course through its waters.
The latest iteration, the 2024 Lake Winnebago Bottom Trawling Assessment Report, offers a bounty of insights gleaned from the capture of 158,886 individual fish of 22 different species.

How Wisconsin DNR research is helping shape wildlife policy

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Office of Applied Science oversees a wide range of wildlife research.
How often are bears reproducing in each zone? How are beavers impacting trout populations? How are predators and chronic wasting disease (CWD) affecting deer numbers? Are elk population models accurate? How much wild rice are geese and swans eating? The list goes on and on. Dens are observed. Birds monitored. Deer collared. Hunters polled.
