Are season adjustments needed after Pennsylvania black bear harvest is down again?

With less than a week remaining in the extended bear season, and only four wildlife management units open, bear harvest figures in Pennsylvania are low.
Based on preliminary figures furnished by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, this year’s bear harvest will be several hundred bears lower than last year’s take of 2,920. That’s the lowest in 16 years.

Get to know the cardinal, the Christmas bird

If there is a Pennsylvania critter that represents Christmas, it must surely be the cardinal. Photographs or paintings of this colorful bird, often proudly perched on a snow-covered evergreen bough, grace many holiday greeting cards.
The bright red plumage of the male against a white and green background presents a striking image. The cardinal is a favorite at other times of the year, too. Seven states have selected the cardinal as their official state bird, including our neighbors in Ohio and West Virginia.

First snow of the season greets many Pennsylvania bear hunters

Bear hunters stepped out into early snow across most of Pennsylvania’s bear range for the opening day of the regular firearms season. The northcentral region had a dusting to several inches in the higher elevations, while some counties in the northeast and southwest mountains received a foot or more of snow.
Even with the excellent tracking snow, bears were slow to come into the Quehanna (northern Clearfield County) check station on the opening Saturday.

Pennsylvania bull hunters do well in elk hunt, cow harvest down

The calm, cold weather, and a colorful morning sky provided a great backdrop for the opening of Pennsylvania’s general elk season Nov. 4. Sixty-eight fortunate hunters drew permits for this limited hunt, however, the opening day rewarded only 11 hunters with elk.
The elk check station was held on the grounds of the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette. Hunters are required to check their elk and supply samples for study and testing.

Popular skywalk at Pennsylvania’s Kinzua Bridge State Park to close soon

The most popular attraction at Kinzua Bridge State Park is about to undergo a three-year rehabilitation project.
The Kinzua Bridge Skywalk will close to pedestrian traffic on Nov. 19. It is scheduled to remain closed for most of the next three years except during the autumn foliage seasons. The park’s 339-acres are centered around what was once the tallest and longest railroad bridge in the world. The land and bridge were purchased by the state in 1963. The park opened in 1970.

Pennsylvania waterways officers snubbed at Fish & Boat Commission board meeting

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat commissioners at their recent meeting were asked to consider a petition to increase the salaries of the agency’s law enforcement officers, but they failed to act.
The commissioners’ inaction was witnessed by most of its waterways conservation officers. In a show of unity, 53 of the current total force of 56 waterways conservation officers attended the meeting.

Habitat restoration projects bring back wild trout to Pennsylvania’s Tubmill Creek

The Tubmill Trout Club Unlimited recently completed yet another project in its continuing efforts to restore fish habitat on Tubmill Creek and its tributaries.
This year’s habitat project improved 2,100 feet of the club’s namesake stream as it flows through the John Goodish property. Goodish raises hundreds of beef cattle, and over the years the cattle have widened the stream channel – warming the stream during the summer and adding a lot of sediment.

Commentary: Trout Unlimited continues to oppose sensible wild vs. stocked trout regulations in Pennsylvania

The secession of stocking on Pennsylvania’s Class A trout streams has been a bone of contention with many anglers since the program was instituted over 40 years ago. In the beginning, any stream identified as Class A could be stocked. There were often angler protests.
More recently there was controversy over ending stocking on Cold Stream, Big Moores Run and Freeman Run – all northcentral Pennsylvania streams that are now Class A. Political pressure enabled Big Moores Run to be returned to the stocking list. Not so for Freeman Run or Cold Stream. Where is the consistency?
