Pennsylvania’s Pine Creek Rail Trail celebrated as state’s Trail of Year

Locals and visitors gathered in this town at the northern terminus of the Pine Creek Rail Trail the weekend of Sept. 24-26 to celebrate its designation by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as Pennsylvania’s 2026 Trail of the Year.
The trail connects Wellsboro and Jersey Shore with 65 miles of crushed gravel where there once was a railroad and before that a Native American corridor used by the Seneca, Haudenosaunee, and Susquehannock nations.

Famous scribe, ‘Nessmuk,’ posthumously inducted into Pennsylvania outdoor writers group

After closing hour at Nessmuk’s Sporting Goods on Saturday, Aug. 22, a campfire in the showroom drew approximately 30 people, and the guest of honor was a man who died in 1890.
“Campfires” is what store owner Zack Buck calls his educational gatherings, and this one was to honor the store’s namesake, outdoor writer and ultralight camping pioneer George Washington Sears, who wrote under the pen name Nessmuk.
