Panfish, walleyes pack one-two punch in Minnesota’s Myrtle Lake

When you consider fishing in the Orr area, Pelican Lake usually comes to mind, and for good reason. It’s a large body of water (over 11,500 acres), with exceptional multi-species fishing opportunities. Pelican draws anglers and vacationers from across the country on a year-round basis.
But there’s a much smaller fishery just to its east that shouldn’t be overlooked. Myrtle Lake, which is almost 900 acres in size, also provides the opportunity to bag multiple species.

Here’s how to properly hold fish in the catch/release era

Is there a right way and a wrong way to hold a fish?
During a time when fisheries conservation demands regular catch-and-release, the answer is a resounding yes. Once it’s out of the water, properly handling a fish is paramount to ensuring it swims away as strong as when it came topside. Whether you’re removing hooks for a healthy release or positioning that personal best catch for a quick photo, there’s a common-sense approach to take in order to get fish back with little or no physical effects to them.

How to properly work a jig for open water 2025

In its most basic form, a jig consists of nothing more than a light wire hook molded into a shaped piece of lead or tungsten. The round jig is the most popular, but there are other options such as stand-up, pill-shaped, football-shaped, and jigs that have built-in weed guards.
They come in a range of sizes and colors to cover species from panfish to lake trout. Jigs likely have accounted for more fish being caught than any other technique.

Cullen lakes in Minnesota’s Crow Wing County provide prime ice-out slab crappie country

There’s an abundance of lakes throughout Crow Wing County that consistently produce respectable panfish. Among them are Middle Cullen and Upper Cullen, which aren’t necessarily known for kicking out huge panfish, but there certainly are plenty of them big enough for the frying pan.

Fishing’s good enough and, doggone it, anglers like Stuart Lake in Minnesota’s Otter Tail County

Otter Tail County’s reputation as one of Minnesota’s premier destinations to consistently catch panfish and largemouth bass is well deserved.
There just seems to be a lot of lakes throughout this area that have the physical characteristics that suit those fish species.

Spider Lake’s watery web hosts plenty of panfish, largemouths in Minnesota’s Hubbard County

The somewhat long path to the public access on Hubbard County’s Spider Lake can be an interesting jaunt. It’s basically a one-way road, just wide enough for a single vehicle, which means if you meet someone going in or out, one of you is going to have to decide who will back up.

Minnesota’s Little Jessie Lake in Itasca County is worth the stop for smallmouth

There are a lot of lakes in Itasca County, so a system such as Little Jessie Lake near Deer River often gets lost in the shuffle. But the lack of angler attention to Little Jessie can be an angler’s advantage, especially if you’re one of those folks who simply likes to catch something – just get bites on a given outing – and not be surrounded by lots of other anglers while doing it.
