Despite so many forsaking it, fall turkey hunting is still a blast

Break the flock, scatter and call – that is the standard practice for most fall turkey hunters in Pennsylvania – the few that remain. Since 1990, the number of participants for fall turkey season has greatly dwindled.
Back then, there were an estimated 234,911 hunters chasing these birds. In 2023, the last year that posted data is available for, that number had fallen to just 66,496.

Trappers are still needed in Pennsylvania and beyond

I don’t know about your portion of the state but where I live in the south-central region of Pennsylvania it is not uncommon to see a half dozen or more freshly killed furbearers on the roadway on my daily commute to work.
And it doesn’t matter if I am in the middle of fields and forest or towns of some size, the critters are there.

Utilize a shooting brace to improve your accuracy this fall

I think all hunters would agree that precisely placing your shot, bullet or arrow is key to putting game down quickly. Spending time on the range to familiarize yourself with your chosen sporting arm is but one way to aid that cause. Another good way to do so is to add a shooting brace to your setup.
A shooting brace is described as anything that allows a hunter to better control his or her sporting arm, thus creating better accuracy in the process. There are many different types currently on the market.

Making a hunting or fishing video on public land? You may have to pay or hit pause

On the surface it sounds like a pretty cool thing to do. Film your hunts, fishing trips and other outdoor experiences and make them available on any number of online platforms … Next thing you know you are an internet sensation. Maybe you will be able to quit your job and make a living off of the outdoors.
Well, that all sounds great,  but you better have access to private land in the state to do so. However, if you choose to do it on public land within Pennsylvania, you better be ready to pay.

Little Acme Dam a nice place to fish early summer in Pennsylvania’s Westmoreland County

Pennsylvania is blessed to have many small impoundments scattered across the state where an angler can make a quick trip to wet a line and catch some fish. One of those in the western portion of the state is Acme Dam in Westmoreland County.
At only 24 acres in size, it is easy to find a spot along the shoreline or on the water to fish, but it is the size of what you may catch that is most impressive in this little lake.

Meadow Grounds Lake is back, better than ever in Pennsylvania’s Fulton County

When the lake was drained, a fish-salvage operation was conducted so stockings were needed to bring the lake back to its former status. First a moratorium on harvest was placed on the water, and then the lake was first stocked with fathead minnows and golden shiners in April of 2021.

Kayaking for carp is the kind of adventure that’s habit forming

Sitting in the kayak and just allowing the current to carry me on this fine afternoon, I was hoping my mesmerizing moment would be interrupted by something on the other end of my line. Typical of the summer action on this stream, it had been slow.
The normal catches of smallmouth bass, fallfish, rock bass and even bluegills were far and few between. When the small crayfish jig hit the water on my next cast, things went way different in a hurry.
