Iowa trappers to be met by low water levels when furbearer season begins Nov. 2

Iowa’s furbearer season opens Saturday, Nov. 2 and the outlook for trappers is positive – most species populations are steady, and there are some early indications wild fur pelt prices could be trending up this winter.
The challenge, however, could be that fewer marshes and streams have good water levels.

Iowa stream flows concerning heading into winter

After record low precipitation in September and October, drought conditions have reappeared across much of Iowa, causing river and stream flows to drop to similar levels as in 2023. Heading in to winter, the potential impacts to the fish and other aquatic organisms is concerning Iowa’s fisheries experts.

Iowa’s Turkey River Wildlife Area has a lot to offer outdoor users

Four turkeys cautiously left the safety of the timber’s cover to wander into a small alfalfa field to hunt for insects at the aptly named Turkey River Wildlife Area.
The 410-acre public area in southeast Howard County sits on a landscape transition from the glaciated north-central Iowa to the Driftless northeast Iowa. With rock outcroppings and steep valleys, this oddly shaped public area is 1-1/2 mile south of Cresco and open for year-round recreation.

Invasive carp detected in Wisconsin’s Lower Chippewa and Lower Black Rivers

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that silver carp, an invasive species, have been detected in portions of the lower Chippewa River and lower Black River in western Wisconsin.
In May 2024, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) collected 134 water samples from the lower Chippewa River to test for invasive carp environmental DNA (eDNA). At that time, no eDNA was found for invasive carp.

Fall is the time to target Iowa’s rivers for fishing

Fall is a great time to catch fish in Iowa’s rivers.
“You are never far from one of Iowa’s many rivers,” said Greg Gelwicks, Iowa DNR interior rivers research biologist. “Fall is a great time to give them a try.”
Fish become more active and hungry when the stream temperature drops. “Look for actively feeding fish where riffles enter pools or rocky areas,” Gelwicks said. “They sit there out of the current and wait for food to come by.”
