Remade Klum Lake should be on Iowa birders, duck hunters radar this fall
Ringed by trees and away from the busy roads in eastern Louisa County, Iowa’s Klum Lake has undergone a significant makeover over the past decade or so.
The 250-acre natural floodplain lake – historically connected to the Mississippi River by Muscatine Slough – had been filled with eight-foot-tall cattails with only a handful of small open water pockets for limited hunting.

The good news for Iowa’s cottontail rabbit hunters is that Iowa’s rabbit population is the highest in more than a decade, with the vast majority of Iowa considered to have good to excellent populations. Iowa’s cottontail rabbit season begins Aug. 30 statewide.
“It should be a really good year for rabbit hunting not only for experienced hunters, but for young or novice hunters who can learn necessary skills with little competition.”

Iowa’s mourning dove, teal seasons open in early September; here’s what to know
Iowa’s mourning dove season begins Sept. 1, and with the mild weather in the forecast and a later teal season, state wildlife experts are predicting a busy opening day.
“Anytime the opening day falls on a holiday weekend, we see higher participation, and with the weather forecast and teal not opening until Sept. 6, we expect a lot of hunters to be out,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Federally endangered pallid sturgeon discovered in Iowa’s Des Moines River
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced on Tuesday that the federally endangered pallid sturgeon was collected for the first time from the lower Des Moines River. The discovery of two pallid sturgeon this spring came a week a part during the Iowa DNR’s annual spring sturgeon sampling effort.
This sampling has been conducted since 2014, but until this year, only shovelnose sturgeon, and an occasional lake sturgeon, have been collected.
“To find a pallid sturgeon was a surprise, but to find a second one in nearly the same spot a week later was truly remarkable.”

Michigan DNR crews have stocked 18.9 million fish so far in ’25
This spring and summer, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources stocked a total of 18,958,970 fish that weighed more than 331.5 tons and consisted of 10 different species and one hybrid.
Fish stocking is an important activity to provide both Michigan residents and visitors with quality fishing opportunities. These efforts help bring an estimated $3.9 billion into the state’s economy through the sportfishing industry, tourism and related businesses.
