Retired Wisconsin DNR game warden Dave Sabrowsky has a reputation of knowing what he’s doing when it comes to baiting bears. It’s more than just throwing a few doughnuts in a hole in the ground every few days.
As they say, a successful hunt relies on location, location, location, but there’s more to it than that. Stand placement, preferred bait – if it’s working, don’t change it in the days before the hunt – and the timing of putting that bait out are all factors.

The definition of communication is “the sending and receiving of information between groups in a face-to-face manner or through communication devices.”
It’s not complicated, so my question is why does the DNR’s Office of Communications seem to be struggling with this concept? The importance of communications between units of government and the people they serve can’t be understated. Transparency and, unfortunately, credibility, suffer when this communication doesn’t happen.

The term fish passage in rivers has been a buzzword for years among fish biologists and is often used when describing the advantages of allowing fish to move upstream or down to find suitable habitat and breeding grounds without being stopped by dams.
“It’s amazing to see what the fish can do when the habitats get reconnected,” said Max Wolter, DNR Sawyer County fisheries biologist in Hayward, Wis.

Could Lake Superior’s Apostle Island National Lakeshore in Wisconsin become a national park? Plan gains traction

An effort by Rep. Tom Tiffany, Wisconsin’s District 7 Congressman, to change the status of Lake Superior’s Apostle Island National Lakeshore to a national park is gaining traction.
Tiffany recently notified the Bayfield County Board of his proposal, stating a representative from his office would like to make a presentation to Bayfiled County’s executive committee on July 11.

Wisconsin’s Washburn, Sawyer County Deer Advisory Councils lower antlerless quotas

In a move similar to surrounding counties, County Deer Advisory Council members in Wisconsin’s Washburn and Sawyer counties recommended a reduction in the number of antlerless deer permits for the 2024 fall hunts.
Last year’s Washburn County antlerless authorizations were 3,100 on public land and 6,000 on private land. This year the recommendation is for 1,000 permits on public land and 5,000 on private land, which reflects what CDAC members heard from the public.

Green Bay produces giant 56-inch muskie for Wisconsin angler fishing for walleyes

A Northwoods angler headed to Peshtigo for Green Bay’s spring-run walleyes instead latched onto a fish he didn’t expect to catch – a 56-inch muskie that bottomed out a fellow angler’s 60-pound scale.
When Ashland, Wis., resident and retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Mark Mackey’s brother called inviting him to come over to the Peshtigo River for some walleye fishing, he didn’t hesitate.
“Bob (Mackey) said, ‘Now’s the time, brother.’ He’s been telling me about the 30-plus inch walleyes he’s been catching for a few years now and sent a few pictures my way too, so it didn’t take much to convince me to make the trip,” Mark Mackey said.

Dave Zeug: A delayed opener on Wisconsin’s Brule River was good for this winter-weary angler

For a Brule River trout fisherman in Wisconsin, the traditional first day of spring has been on the last Saturday in March for decades.
It doesn’t matter if there is still 3 feet of snow on the storied river’s banks or 3 feet of melted snow putting the river into flood stage, steelhead addicts will be there on opening day. This includes yours truly, at least it did until this year’s opener fell over a family-oriented Easter weekend. And that’s OK. At this stage of the game, I have had plenty of Brule River openers under my belt.
