After completing this year’s annual classification flights, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) saw elk in the Bears Ears (E-2) and White River (E-6) areas returning to the population objective range for the first time since the severe winter of 2022-23.
As a result, CPW is proposing an increase in hunting licenses for the 2026 Big Game Hunting season.
After an operation that lasted 30 days, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has suspended its lethal removal effort for an uncollared wolf in Rio Blanco County that met the agency’s chronic depredation definition.
CPW staff looked in the area using drones and thermal imaging between January 24 and February 22.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has seen positive results in restoring native Colorado River cutthroat trout in Colorado through the introduction of Trojan male brook trout.
Also known as YY brook trout, Trojan males have two Y chromosomes, unlike the wild males that have one X and one Y chromosome. When introduced into wild fish populations of the same species, Trojan males only produce male offspring when they spawn with wild fish.
