Angler input needed to help study walleyes in New York waters of Lake Ontario

The New York Department of Conservation is planning to study walleyes in the Lower Niagara River, Irondequoit Bay, and Sodus Bay.
These Lake Ontario waters are stocked, but it’s difficult to determine the contribution of wild versus stocked walleyes to the fishable population. Therefore, DEC is utilizing otolith microchemistry to analyze at least 100 walleyes from each water to determine stocked or wild origin.
“We are asking anglers who are catching walleyes to be a part of this important study,” Brad Hammers, fishery manager for DEC, said.
