Illinois teal hunters to get early start on new duck season

According to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service figures, Illinois hunters harvested 4,899 green-winged teal in 2024, up from 1,350 in 2023 – an increase of 263%. (Stock photo)

Last season’s numbers are still pending, but Illinois waterfowl hunters head into the 2026 early teal season with confidence following a breakout performance two years ago.
A sharp increase in the state’s teal harvest during the 2024 September season was reported, even as harvests of both major teal categories declined nationally. Illinois hunters will have another early opportunity to pursue teal when the state’s early teal season opens Sept. 5.
