Looking for a backwoods black bear? Here’s what to know

Bear hunting in the Adirondack Forest Preserve has become my favorite seasonal pursuit. Every fall, before the weather gets too far gone, I spend a week alone hunting and camping. The goal is always the same: to hunt and hike until I hopefully come across a black bear in its natural mountain habitat.
As these trips go, the plan on paper always sounds easier than the actual trip on the ground.
