How breed loyalty can get us into trouble when it comes to our hunting dogs

Take a walk through the aisles of Game Fair in Minnesota, and you’ll see more than enough Labrador retrievers (upper right). This isn’t a coincidence, and speaks to the breed’s popularity. But you’ll also see a wide variety of flushing and pointing breeds, and get a chance to talk to the people behind them. This is a good way to get a feel for the available breeds, and to allow yourself the chance to learn about which one might be the perfect fit for not only your hunting style, but your home life. We are in the middle of another Game Fair, and if you’ve never been, you should go. This is true for all outdoors-minded folks, but especially so for anyone who has a love of bird dogs. Minnesota’s Game Fair is one-of-one when it comes to showcasing bird dogs, and is truly a spectacle.
While you’ll see more than enough Labrador retrievers to go around, you’ll also see obscure breeds, pointers of multiple flavors, and a handful of dog breeds that are more comfortable on the couch than they ever would be in a duck blind.
