Surprise bear shows up in southeast Michigan

A growing population of black bears in Michigan is leading to more bears dispersing as they go in search of a new area that is not already dominated by larger bears. (Stock photo)

A black bear roaming Michigan’s Wayne County in mid-May caught the attention of residents, some who initially mistook the bear for a big cat.
State wildlife officials who confirmed the sighting were somewhat surprised, too. “This is the furthest southeast we’ve seen,” Cody Norton, a bear specialist with the Michigan DNR, said.
