Want to train your bird dog to find sheds? Here’s the right approach

One of the biggest things that people get wrong about trying to train a shed dog is thinking that it’s mostly a nose-game, like upland hunting. It’s not, and the more you learn to get them to use their eyes to find antlers, the easier it gets. (Contributed photos)

Just about any dog that will retrieve a bumper, a ball, or a dead duck, can also be taught how to find shed antlers. The key ingredients are retrieving desire, and natural hold and carry.
But, it’s also not as simple as replacing your favorite bumper with an antler and then expecting your four-legged hunting partner to make the connection. This all starts with a reality check on scent.
