A smarter strategy for hunting timberdoodles

Woodcock can provide some of the most consistent upland hunts of the season, especially on public land, but you need to know where to look. The little worm eaters are fond of low, wet ground and thick cover. While it might take some walking to find them, once you do, it’s highly likely your dog will put up at least a couple in any given spot. (Contributed photos)

It’s pretty rare to meet someone who will introduce you to their bird dog and then say they picked it up specifically for woodcock. Sure, those folks are out there, but they are about as common as a ruffed grouse double in the early season when the woods are thick and the birds are scattered.
While woodcock might take a backseat to grouse and pheasants, they are far from valueless when it comes to upland opportunities.
