New York hunters head afield as September means season openers

As autumn officially begins on Sept. 22, the number of hunting opportunities continues to increase. Goose and some deer and bear hunts have already taken place with several youth waterfowl and pheasant hunts forthcoming. Meanwhile, archery seasons in both the Northern and Southern Zones are poised to open Sept. 27 and Oct. 1 respectively. (Stock photo)

New York hunters are in “decision mode,” or soon will be as hunting seasons for big game and numerous small game species continue to open across the state.
In the Southern Zone, an early rifle hunt for black bears is underway in several southeastern New York Wildlife Management Units. Also in the Southern Zone, an early antlerless deer season is also underway in limited WMUs. Both seasons conclude Sept. 21.
