The past two decades have produced a wide and wild assortment of ideas and proposals to help fund and maintain Illinois’ collection of state parks and natural areas.
“State Park, Great Parks” was launched in 2014. That initiative came on the heels of the 2012 DNR “Sustainability Bill,” created when lawmakers approved a $2 fee increase on vehicle registrations that would be earmarked as dedicated revenue for Illinois state parks. This year, on Aug. 6, Gov. JB Pritzker announced a new endowment for Illinois state parks, with a goal of establishing a “permanent source of funds that can’t be redirected or taken away.”
