7% bump in Wisconsin’s breeding duck numbers from ’24 may not tell the full story

Taylor Finger, game bird ecologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), told attendees of a June 30 DNR Migratory Game Bird Advisory Committee meeting that the total breeding duck estimate in Wisconsin this spring was 7% higher than last year and is 27% above the long-term average.
“The reason why this is up over last year is that in the last three-plus years we are getting quite a few more ‘other’ ducks counted in our spring survey because we’ve had to run the survey earlier due to a lack of winter,” Finger said.
