Minnesota foundation helps youth with life-threatening illnesses ‘just be kids’

In May 2024, Joshua Hansen, of Rochester, Minn., caught this Rainy River sturgeon during an outing provided by the Minnesota Outdoor Adventure Foundation. Josh died Jan. 9 “due to complications following a courageous battle with B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia,” according to his obituary. He was just 18 years old. The obituary requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Eagle Mount, Minnesota Outdoor Adventure Foundation, or Childhood Cancer Community.

Dan Oliver remembers.
He remembers that Lake of the Woods ice-fishing trip several years ago. One night, sitting at a lodge bar sipping an adult beverage with friends after a day on the hard water, Oliver remembers overhearing a conversation about “this foundation,” and being intrigued by it. After all, it granted outdoor wishes to sick children and wounded combat veterans.
