Slow down and let your dogs work for roosters

Pacing is important to pheasant hunting, and it’s easy to go too fast. This pressures the dogs to keep moving and can make the birds extra panicky. A better bet is to force yourself to slow way down so your flushers can really work the cover. Not only does this ensure they miss fewer birds, but it also ensures you’ll get better shot opportunities when the roosters do flush. (Contributed photo)

In life, patience is a virtue. In hunting, it’s often a necessity.
Deer hunters know this. Waterfowl hunters do, too. For some reason, a lot of pheasant hunters have missed the memo. This costs them birds, at least in the case of anyone running flushing dogs. The key to a limit of ringnecks is often just slowing down and letting the dogs do their thing.
This is easier said than done.
