Severe drought leading to potential fire danger in Ohio

The hottest, driest summer since 1988 has already taken a toll on local firefighters in southern Ohio, where reports of wildfires in that area have tripled in the last three months. (File photo courtesy of Michigan DNR)

As drought conditions worsen across Ohio, so does the threat of wildfires.
As of Sept. 20, 37 southern, eastern, and central Ohio counties judged under extreme and exceptional drought conditions on the Ohio Drought Monitor Map were also under an outdoor open burning ban issued by the state fire marshal. That number was likely to increase weekly.
