The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted rules creating refuges around fish passages and spawning areas where fish are concentrated and vulnerable to angler harvest.
The board’s approval came Feb. 28 and will continue the year-round fish refuge encompassing a new fish passage at the Kietzsch Park dam on the Milwaukee River. It also establishes seasonal fish refuges in state-managed walleye spawning marshes protecting walleyes throughout the Lake Winnebago system during spring spawning.
