We noticed the mayflies in the air at around 10:30 p.m. and within minutes the fish were feeding.
There was a pair that sounded like good ones feeding within earshot – one upstream, one downstream – and Jory Dirkse suggested we try the upstream fish first. He maneuvered his drift boat slightly from where he was anchored midstream on the Pere Marquette River to give me a better angle and there was just enough moonlight to see a splash as it fed.
