Winter severity starting to concern northern Minnesota deer managers

After what was considered a severe winter on deer throughout most of northern Minnesota in 2021-22, deer managers in that part of the state are again keeping a close watch on the DNR's Winter Severity Index with some pockets of the north-central and northeast starting to reach concerning severity levels. By most accounts, northern Minnesota deer needed a break this year from another harsh winter. But that hasn’t been the case, as there are areas where the level of concern is again rising regarding the season’s effects on the herd – just as another winter storm struck the state this week.
