A day of fun-fishing on Green Bay turned out to be a record-breaker for 29-year-old Austin Schiefer, of Menasha, Wis., the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 30.
On a boat off Oconto with friend Ted Johnson, of Waupaca, the anglers spent more than five hours releasing smallmouth bass. The only one Schiefer didn’t return to the water ended up being a new state record, a fish just shy of two feet long with a girth of at least 21 inches.
“I just hate killing them,” Schiefer said. “I really wanted to let it go. I have two biologists’ names and phone numbers, and tried calling them multiple times. I left voicemails. I didn’t hear anything, so my buddy stayed with the fish on the water and I drove to the bait shop to get some information on what to do with this fish.”
