Ohio’s Outdoors Trailblazers: Fred Snyder is a jack of many trades on Lake Erie

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Fred Snyder made his mark working on Lake Erie for Ohio Sea Grant until his retirement in 2009. Among his many accomplishments, he was the originator of the Lake Erie Charter Captains Conference, which educates those with an interest in Ohio’s great lake. (Photo by John Hageman)

Fred Snyder is no stranger to many of Lake Erie’s fishermen, Great Lakes Sea Grant agents and university researchers, Ohio State University Extension staff, former students, and fellow outdoor writers.
He grew up in West Liberty near the Mad River and his father ran the popular S & S Bait and Tackle business. He spent much of his time behind the counter, tying bluegill and crappie flies, fashioning his father’s proprietary weedless nightcrawler harnesses, and serving customers.
