University of Illinois scientists to help Department of Transportation protect natural resources

A $185.5 million agreement between the Illinois Department of Transportation and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will put scientists in the field across Illinois for the next decade, helping the state build and improve its transportation network while protecting natural and cultural resources.
The agreement extends a partnership dating to the 1970s and gives IDOT continued access to researchers with expertise in geology, wildlife, wetlands, water resources, archaeology and other areas critical to transportation planning.

Memorial scholarship shoot in Wisconsin honors legacy of Aaron Hass

Aaron Hass died unexpectedly in 2021 from COVID-19, but his memory lives on, thanks to friends and family in the local trap shooting community who come together each year to honor their friend and support groups that were meaningful to him.
In its first five years, the Aaron Hass Memorial Scholarship Fund has given $79,000 to La Crosse Central/Logan and Aquinas high school trap teams, Western Technical College, Central High School, and other groups supporting kids and the outdoors. In this part of western Wisconsin, the lives and legacies of the Hass family are inexorably linked to the local shooting scene.

Mild winter bodes well for Wisconsin’s deer season, deer hunters

With another late start to the gun deer season, Wisconsin hunters may need help getting deer to move on opening weekend. The rut will be history by Saturday, Nov. 21, for the opener, but the lead-up to the full moon on Nov. 24 may spur rut-weary bucks to slip out of their beds and into feeding areas during daylight hours.
Bad weather, early success, and fatigue might be the best excuses for hunters seeking to leave the woods before Sunday sundown; the Green Bay Packers’ bye week takes football out of play.
