Commentary: You can teach an old dog to hunt

The old saying is that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Yet bird hunters who’ve tried know better.
While few would argue that an 8-week-old puppy offers the greatest opportunity to shape a finished gun dog, age alone does not determine a dog’s potential. Every year, hunters adopt adult dogs from shelters, inherit family pets, or acquire started dogs that never received formal training. Many go on to become dependable hunting companions – not because they learned instinct, but because someone finally gave those instincts direction.

Suburban deer management expands in southwest Pennsylvania

Oakmont is the latest in a growing number of suburbs around Pittsburgh to adopt a controlled archery program to manage an overabundance of deer.
After more than a year of debate, Oakmont council voted, 6-1, late this summer to approve targeted deer management using hunters and professional sharpshooters on designated properties. Nearly a dozen communities in and around Allegheny County have similar programs. In mid-September, one of the county’s largest municipalities, Penn Hills, held a special non-voting, public meeting to discuss its deer problem.

How much do fish dads matter? New Penn State study has Finding Nemo plot

The plot of Finding Nemo, a film that features an overprotective single father fish taking on dangers at sea to care for his son, may be more reflective of actual fish dad behavior than was previously known.
A new study led by a scientist at Penn State found that baby freshwater fish, when raised by dutiful fathers, fare far better than their non-dad-raised peers in life-or-death situations. After conducting a novel study that included both behavioral observations and brain genomics analyses, the researchers concluded that early paternal care was associated with later behavioral differences and changes in brain gene regulation.

Changes to Michigan’s furbearer regulations discussed

Regulation changes for fishers, martens, bobcats, and gray foxes could be coming in 2028 following stakeholder discussions at the Michigan DNR’s Furbearer Forum.
DNR officials met with trappers, hound hunters, and others in St. Ignace to discuss potential changes to furbearer rules for the 2028-29 regulation cycle, with most of the focus on hunting fishers and martens with hounds, and calling and hunting bobcats at night.
