Illinois hunters anxious as report shows mallards drop

Illinois duck hunters have plenty to watch as the 2026-27 season approaches, but the latest federal waterfowl survey offers a mixed picture of the birds that will eventually make their way down the Mississippi and Illinois flyways.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s newly released 2026 Waterfowl Population Status Report estimates 33.4 million breeding ducks in the traditional survey area, essentially unchanged from 2025 but 6% below the long-term average dating to 1955. For Illinois hunters, perhaps the most important number is the mallard estimate.

New director takes wheel to steer Illinois DNR

The Illinois DNR’s ship has bobbed and weaved and pitched over the past two decades, but it has managed to stay afloat.
Now the agency has a new captain in charge of keeping it upright. A central Illinois native with experience in conservation, public administration, finance and law enforcement has taken control of the agency at a time when it faces a broad range of challenges involving wildlife, public lands, outdoor recreation and resource management.

Ryan Rothstein: Oaks and why I fear Minnesota deer hunters may be in for a tougher season

Lately, I’ve been thinking we could be in for a tough deer season. If that sounds ludicrous on the surface, I agree.
Deer numbers in at least one-third of Minnesota are as high or higher than they’ve ever been, and populations elsewhere are rebounding. But the reason I think we could be in for a tough one has nothing to do with deer numbers.

Inside the Minnesota DNR’s multi-front effort to track Lake of the Woods sturgeon

Boaters on Lake of the Woods may have noticed something unusual bobbing on the water this summer: orange buoys marking the ends of 300-foot gillnets, four to a site, part of a Minnesota DNR effort to sample lake sturgeon on Lake of the Woods.
There were about 40 sites on the lake that the DNR sampled there this year as part of a lake-wide survey spanning 136 sites in all.

Commentary: Wisconsin’s suppressor law at crossroads

Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc., calls on lawmakers to remove the state’s federal registration requirement and prepare for a potential legal battle.
A federal court ruling that struck down National Firearms Act (NFA) registration requirements for suppressors has opened a new front in the fight over gun rights, this time in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin DNR bumps reimbursement rate for venison donations

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently announced a $25 per deer increase to the reimbursement rate for meat processors who help with Wisconsin’s deer donation program.
Those processors will now be paid $125 a deer, an increase from $100. Processors will now get $135 per deer if chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing is required, up from $110.

Commentary: Help transform the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame

The Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame has launched a transformation era under the guidance of a newly formed Advisory Committee tasked with restructuring and resurrecting the institution to its rightful prominence.
Composed entirely of venerated Hall of Fame members, the board includes me and my brother, Paul Thorne, promoter Chip Leer, marketing strategist Scott Bonnema, and television host Jon Thelen. Together, this group is charting a course to preserve the state’s storied angling heritage while casting a bright line into the future of youth education through its historical successes both on the water and in business.
