K-9 officer Scout of the Ohio Division of Wildlife helps solve attempted murder case

Ohio Wildlife officer Jason Keller and his companion, K-9 officer Scout, recently helped solve a high-profile attempted murder case in Warren County.
Keller, who is now the Division of Wildlife’s District 5 Operations Manager, said Scout, a 9-year-old female yellow Labrador retriever, has a history of outstanding service since graduating from the Ohio DNR’s Canine Academy in 2018.

Decision to end deputy law enforcement officers programs in Pennsylvania leaves many hurt, angry

An angry, bewildered reaction from across the state swiftly followed the revelation in early August that the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Fish & Boat Commission jointly were ending their 100-plus-year-old deputy law enforcement officers programs.
By midmonth, the agencies had abruptly dismissed more than 120 deputy game wardens and 36 deputy waterways conservation officers.

Iowa’s Welch Lake Complex a key protector of West Okoboji Lake

For the past three decades, the 1,475-acre Welch Lake complex has been protecting the water quality of Iowa’s highest profile lake – West Okoboji Lake – by filtering 16% of its watershed through 56 natural and restored wetlands that stretch 2-1/2 miles northwest of Hwy. 9.
A major restoration was completed in the early 2000s, followed by another large wetland enhancement project, in 2019. The wetlands collect sediment and reduce nutrients before water enters the north end of West Okoboji Lake.

Steve Carney: The hunt for the big bluegills of August

I hear this question a lot: “How do I catch and locate big bluegills?”
Not being a bobber person, I always recommend trolling itty-bitty crankbaits that run shallow and are about 2 inches long. At this time of August, most ’gills are either above the weeds or on the edge at around 11 feet. Tiny cranks run about 4 feet and are perfect for just ticking the weeds.
