Hunters Feeding Michigan: More than 700 deer taken so far in ’26

The Michigan DNR’s Hunters Feeding Michigan program has expanded to seven 6-by-12-foot commercial-grade refrigerator trailers, which can handle minus- 10 degrees. The program also works with 22 area processors, depending on their beef, pork and lamb schedules, and loans trailers to farmers for seven days. (Photo courtesy of DNR)

In summer 2023, a farmer harvested about 30 deer and stored them in the rented reefer trailer – but then he yelled at Tom Weston.
“Yeah, I appreciate the refrigerated trailer, but give me the trailer here in May when they’re doing the most damage to my crops – not in August,” he told Weston, chief technology officer for the Michigan DNR. A year later, DNR rented three reefer trailers and added participating processors.
