By late summer and into early autumn, most Pennsylvania trout streams have shrunk to their lowest levels of the season. In particularly dry times, some small freestone streams pretty much dry up and become a series of puddles that are nearly impossible to fish.
Other streams, both freestone and spring-fed waters, which have not shrunk to that level, can still be extremely low and difficult to fish. The first thing a fly-fisherman needs to do when fishing during low-water conditions is to take the temperature of the water.
