Three rounds: Illinois rifle capacity measure signed into law

Illinois deer hunters will be able to load up to three rounds in legal centerfire rifles beginning Jan. 1, 2027, after Gov. JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 2756 into law on July 24.
The new law marks another milestone in the evolution of Illinois deer hunting regulations, but unlike the state’s introduction of rifle hunting several years ago, hunters and conservation officials expect the transition to be considerably smoother.

Ralph Loos: Illinois record largemouth turns 50, much to anglers’ chagrin

In our online pole on the Illinois Outdoor News website that asks readers to cast a vote, I annually type a simple question: Is this the year somebody finally hooks a new state record largemouth bass?
Without fail, at least 85% of you always vote “no.” And you are always 100% correct. It’s true – despite a half-century of advances in the way we manage fish and the evolution of catch-and-release, no Illinois angler has been able to match or surpass Ray Easley’s legendary catch.

CWD confirmed in a wild deer near Stillwater, Minn.

The Minnesota DNR announced on Tuesday that a deer near Stillwater has been confirmed positive for chronic wasting disease.

The female deer was reported to the DNR by a landowner who observed it for several days and noted it was unafraid of people and appeared emaciated. The deer died on July 16 and was retrieved by DNR staff. It was brought to the University of Minnesota’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for a necropsy and CWD testing. The DNR received confirmation of the disease earlier this week.
