Massive fish kill hits Ohio’s Maumee River

According to a citation that was issued by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a pair of Henry County companies were responsible for a leak of liquid Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer that occurred on a shared facility, spilling into the Maumee River and killing tens of thousands of fish.     
A neighbor to the property says he first smelled ammonia on the evening of July 2 and nearby landowners reported the odor coming from Huston Creek and alerted the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, which closed nearby roads on July 3.
