You want a great hunting dog, but the only papers he came with were lining his kennel at the shelter. Think you still have a chance?
Absolutely, say trainers who have worked with mixed breeds and other “non-sporting” dogs that just loved life afield. There are several things you have to watch for and there are some additional challenges, but if Meatloaf the English bulldog can retrieve a goose, your lovable mutt just might be able to accompany you to the field.
