Wisconsin DNR uses $9,000 from fraud case after kayaker faked his death

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) used about $9,000 in restitution to buy new sonar equipment for emergency response to public safety incidents and natural resource protection cases.
The DNR received the restitution as part of a 2025 Green Lake County Circuit Court ruling against a kayaker who staged his death in an attempt to escape apprehension.

Wisconsin Mixed Bag: NRB to Convene Special Meeting July 23 on Wolf Damage Payments Emergency Rule

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) will convene for a special virtual meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 23, to act on a request from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on an emergency rule related to wolf depredation claims. The DNR is asking the NRB to approve a scope statement for an emergency rule approval that would first allow the DNR to set a public hearing and comment period.

Bill expanding deer rifle capacity in Illinois needs signature

Illinois deer hunters are one step away from seeing another significant firearms regulation change, as Senate Bill 2756 awaits action by Gov. JB Pritzker.
Meanwhile, the coming deer season will include a potential caveat: Hunters could see effects of a new law allowing more nuisance deer permits to be issued up and down the state. Questions remain about how boosting those permits will affect the deer population.
