Guest Editorial: An outdoors to-do list for Minnesota’s next governor

When Tim Walz first ran for governor in 2018, he built his campaign around a simple promise with the “One Minnesota” slogan. The idea was straightforward. A state as geographically and culturally diverse as ours could find common ground with the right leader. While it was a good sentiment, both sides of the aisle would agree that the unifying vision has not been realized.

High water means tough fishing for stream anglers in southeast Minnesota

Trout and smallmouth waters across southeast Minnesota are receding after a wave of storms dumped anywhere from six to 10 inches of rain ahead of the July 4th holiday weekend, leaving anglers high and dry as flood waters made streams and rivers unfishable.
As of early Tuesday, many smaller streams were clearing up, with larger waters, like the popular Root River, still high, dirty and unfishable.

Three-year study aims to protect cold-water fish habitat in Minnesota

Researchers are studying Minnesota’s cold-water fish habitat to better understand how climate change and land use affect lakes and streams, with the goal of helping wildlife managers better protect those ecosystems.
The Protecting Cold Water Fish Habitat project is funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources and is being led by University of Minnesota graduate student Michael McGuigan. The study has three primary objectives.

Harvest on Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs at 40% of state’s ’26 walleye quota

As Minnesota enters mid-July, the walleye harvest on Lake Mille Lacs has reached about 40% of this year’s quota, an increase from the same period last year.
Brian Nerbonne, regional fisheries manager with the DNR, said a creel survey is conducted on Lake Mille Lacs every two weeks during the summer. The latest data collection period was June 1-15.

Wisconsin’s Northern Highlands research station has been for answers for 80 years

You likely missed it, but the Northern Highland Fishery Research Area in Vilas County celebrated its 80th anniversary June 20, making it one of the world’s longest-running fisheries research projects.
So, let’s blow our kazoos and pop champagne corks to show we support the Wisconsin DNR’s commitment to research and science-based policy-making. Sure, lawmakers often ignore it, but we’re better served when data-driven facts steer and sustain publicly-owned fisheries.

Jeremiah Haas: Time to start gathering early season buck intel

As this summer eventually eases into fall, deer hunters will start to wonder what bucks are around from the previous year, get an idea how much antler growth has happened on the bucks that we passed last season, and have a small hope that maybe a new buck of a lifetime has wandered onto the property.

Oak Duke: Never trust a hungry bear (and bears are always hungry)

The other day on the trout stream…contemplation was shattered by a young man yelling downstream. Arguing. Loud yelling on a trout stream…unheard of!
The times are changing all right…and not for the better. “A trout stream is one place for peace and quiet,” says the grouchy old man.
