A rite of passage for country youths during the past century was learning about burdock. In this context, learning means having someone toss a burdock bur at them and “learning” how it sticks to one’s clothing or worse yet – ones hair.
The burs’ resemblance to Velcro hook and loop fasteners is no accident.
