The best exercise you can get your four-legged hunting partner won’t happen on land

Provided your dog already has been introduced to water properly, you should try to facilitate swimming as much as you can throughout the late-spring and summer months. Swimming has been proven to be about as low-risk and high-reward of an exercise as you can provide for them. It’s low-impact, great for dogs of all ages, and offers a pile of mental health benefits. Some dogs love the water, others don’t. The ones that don’t often belong to a breed that is not known for doing much duck work in the fall, but also can be any dog with a healthy fear of water.
This is generally the result of a poor water introduction, which comes in a few common forms. Swimming a puppy too early, pushing a young dog into the water (forcing them to swim), or swimming a dog for the first time in frigid water can all set the stage for a life of frustration at the lake’s edge.
