Dan Ladd: New York’s lead-tainted venison bill is a head scratcher

At issue is legislation in New York that, if passed, would ban hunters from donating wild game if it was taken with the use of lead ammunition. "At some point, if this law passes, hunters could very likely become frustrated and not bother with donating a deer," Ladd writes. (Stock photo)

It’s always something this time of year, especially when it comes to our state legislature and hunting and trapping legislation in New York.
A few years ago, it was banning coyote hunting contests, and most recently consideration to require hunters to report the taking of large canines and DEC to investigate them. Then there was a bill that would’ve put insurmountable requirements on gun ranges.
