It once was known as “Tuppeek-hanne” by the First Nations, Rivière au Fiel by the French, and later named the Clarion by surveyor Daniel Stanard because its flowing water sounded like a distant clarion horn to him.
Sadly, the 115-mile-long river would eventually become known as “the most polluted waterway in Pennsylvania.” The depletion of natural resources nationwide fueled rapid economic growth at the turn of the century. The Clarion River Valley was not immune to the resulting devastation.
