Wood duck becomes official waterfowl species of Michigan

Michigan state lawmakers voted on March 25 to make the wood duck the first official duck of Michigan. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the legislation (HB 4044) the next day, making the designation official.
“Michigan’s recognition of the wood duck celebrates more than a beautiful bird; it honors a conservation comeback made possible by protecting wetlands, restoring habitat and standing up for the future of waterfowl,” said lead bill author, Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn).

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Getting ready for the ‘inland’ trout opener in New York

April 1 is opening day for the inland trout regular season in New York. It still generates excitement within the angling community, although not as much as when I was a kid over 50 years ago.
It may have lost some of its luster when the Department of Environmental Conservation created a statewide catch-and-release season for inland streams in 2021, but as far as the state agency that manages these resources is concerned, the new regulation has not compromised trout populations.

Keith McCaffery, former state deer biologist, headed into Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame

Keith McCaffery took his dad’s advice seriously.
When they were out fishing, his dad told the lad to look at what he enjoys doing in his spare time, and then try to find work doing that same thing.
“I did just that,” said McCaffery, now 86.

Illinois Deer Classic on the move once again

Illinois’ place as a top whitetail state was reestablished – at least for a few days – by an event that appears to have gained a second breath of its own.
But just as a successful 2026 Illinois Deer Classic was packing up in Peoria, show organizers announced that yet another move for the oft-relocated showcase will take place in 2027.

Wisconsin’s Iola Conservation Club hosts first all-girl hunter education class

Teaching a hunter education class is nothing new for Scott Bestul, who’s been doing it for 40 years.
His latest class, held over five sessions March 10-19 at the Iola Conservation Club, turned out to be a first for the avid hunter and Conservation Congress delegate for Waupaca County. All 12 students are girls, which Bestul said hasn’t happened in any of his classes over his four decades of volunteer instruction.
