Tom Pink: Maintaining a spear shack on the ice each winter is worth the work

Although there is still enough lake and river ice to drive a truck on in some spots in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we pulled our spearing shack to shore recently. We will still be ice fishing in this neck of the woods for nearly a month, but we’ll be using a portable shanty or sitting on a bucket from here on out.

Illinois bobcat hunters, trappers see a slight decrease in tags filled

Bobcat harvest slid slightly in Illinois this season, but interest in the limited number of permits issued by DNR each fall continues to rise.
A record 9,700 trappers and hunters applied for the 2,000 bobcat permits available for the 2025-26 season, which ended Feb. 15. In all, 654 tags were filled.

Fed dollars boost Wisconsin DNR’s budget with nearly $38 million for fish, wildlife

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will be sending more than $1.2 billion in Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration excise tax apportionments to support states, commonwealths and territories in their efforts to fund conservation and outdoor efforts.
Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is due to receive $13,478,630 in fish restoration dollars, the sixth-highest in the country, and $23,485,531 in wildlife restoration funds – the ninth-most.

Federal funds for Wisconsin’s Voluntary Public Access program still in limbo

Wisconsin’s Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program (VPA-HIP) allows hunting and other recreational activities on roughly 32,000 acres of private land across the state. While supporters say the program is beneficial to landowners, outdoor enthusiasts and the greater ecosystem, federal funding that supports the program is in a state of limbo.
