Van Buren County man gets prison, lifetime hunting ban in Michigan

A Van Buren County man received prison time, a large fine, and a lifetime ban from hunting in Michigan for poaching nine trophy bucks nearly five years ago.
Justin Ernst, of Decatur, pleaded guilty in February to three counts of illegal taking and possessing of whitetail deer, one count of obtaining a hunting license when ineligible, and one count of felon in procession of a firearm, the Michigan DNR stated.

Having roughly 653 registered anglers from 10 states participating in the 2026 sturgeon season at Black Lake was encouraging for both Michigan DNR and groups working to improve sturgeon populations.
The fact that five of the six fish caught by anglers had previously been tagged by biologists was even more encouraging – a sign that long-term monitoring is working, according to DNR Fisheries Biologist Neal Godby.
