Ohio Insider: An autopsy of the final deer season numbers

Just what’s in the water in Coshocton County?
According to the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s final deer season harvest statistics, that north-central Ohio county led the state for the 24th consecutive year. Deer hunters there killed 8,527 animals during the just concluded 2025-26 season. I asked that question recently in our annual deer season roundup conversation with Division of Wildlife Deer Biologist Clint McCoy.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada released a 43-page binational report on Jan. 20 titled “State of the Great Lakes 2025 Report” that shows the condition of these bodies of water pursuant to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Plenty of mixed opinions about Pennsylvania’s deer herd

Commentary: National Fishing Expo in Ohio always allows opportunities for old friends

Temperatures during Ohio’s 2026 National Fishing Expo hovered on both sides of zero the entire three days of the event. A 12-inch snowfall in Columbus also compounded the brutal temperatures.
Despite the extreme conditions in the great outdoors, the “great indoors” of the National Fishing Expo provided a temporary, but much needed escape, for anglers fighting the Buckeye State’s worst outbreak of cabin fever since we’ve had fevers in cabins.

CWD is a concern for Ohio DNR with latest proposal to reintroduce elk

The Ohio DNR is concerned about chronic wasting disease (CWD) and the effect it might have on any elk reintroduced into the state.
State Rep. Justin Pizulli sponsored legislation in early January to study the prospect of reintroducing elk to Ohio. The legislation also allows for a study into the impact of “side-by-side” trail vehicles in state forest trails. Pizulli, who represents Scioto, Adams and part of Brown counties, sponsored the “Tails and Trails Act” to possibly bolster the economy of his district with increased hunting and tourism.

“When far-western birds turn up this far east, it’s always noteworthy,” said Steve Gosser, of Pittsburgh. “The varied thrush is not only very rare in Pennsylvania, but a stunning bird. For many people, this was likely their first opportunity to see one.
