Extremely rare blue bullfrog spotted in Channahon, Illinois

A blue bullfrog was spotted at McKinley Woods in Channahon. The Aug. 30 sighting by Jen Carusi, who also was able to photograph the rare creature, caught the attention of wildlife fans across the Midwest.
A similar specimen found in Ohio in 2020 created a nationwide stir. The last reported sighting of a blue bullfrog in Illinois was in DuPage County in 2019.

Steve Pollick: Sandhill cranes making their presence increasingly known in Ohio

Increasingly as you prowl around the wetlands of northern Ohio, your ears may pick up a cacophony of deep-warbling calls.
The ragged music inspires a made-up word, “rawking,” or as some folks call it, a “rolling bugle” call. It is a haunting, eerie echo from the distant past. Searching carefully, your eyes may catch sight of a small flock of big but slender gray birds – sandhill cranes – standing in a grain field or maybe setting wings to land in a marsh.

Ralph Loos: New ‘rewilding’ law in Illinois an open invite for skeptics among us

Anytime a missive begins “Illinois is the first state to . . .” or “Illinois has done what no other state has done . . .” most of us who’ve been around the block a few times here are naturally skeptical about what comes next.
That’s certainly the case with the new “rewilding” law that goes into effect on the first day of 2026. What is it? Tough to say, really. Using the term “rewilding” makes it sound like something those of us who support hunting, fishing and all things outdoors should celebrate.

Four ways to turn passing shots into point-blank opportunities on waterfowl

I have a friend from South Dakota – a veteran, lifelong waterfowler who hunts a minimum of four days a week during the season – who didn’t purchase a decoy until he was in his 40s.
Indeed, he made his bones as a waterfowler by pass-shooting ducks and geese from ranges that far exceeded my abilities and maximum-effective range as a wingshooter. Still, my friend’s many kills weren’t always clean. He still had too many misses, which, I argued to him, could be winnowed down considerably by hunting over decoys and, if done right, pulling birds in closer.
