If the first person to import Asian carp to North America was a Star Trek fan, when he turned them loose perhaps he repeated the traditional Vulcan phrase Mr. Spock often used, “Live long and prosper.” Regardless of the send-off, the first batch of Asian carp did live long and are still prospering – especially the prospering part.
Since that day, fisheries biologists have adopted a different phrase that dates back to the Crusades, “Kill them all and let God sort them out.” That didn’t work out as well as the Vulcan greeting.
